Technology of Travelling Wave Tubes (TWT)

Travelling Wave Tubes (TWT) has become the microwave amplifier of choice for many commercial and military systems. Was originally developed for network communication, this device became the basis for many devices the military applications, including radar Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) and Electronic Warfare (EW) system. All types of  Travelling Wave Tubes (TWTs) generally consists of an electron gun, a slow wave structure, magnetic focussing system.

RF input and output couplers, and collectors. With the operating voltage is applied, the electron gun that produces electron beam, is injected into the slow wave structure (SWS). The magnetic focussing system which is electron beam, to enable travel longitudinally down the center of the slow wave structure.

Thermionic cathode advances in technology, increasing the operating life, and the development of high energy product magnetic material such as samarium cobalt, has allowed the reduced size of magnetic circuits.
