Technology Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) from Cisco has been successfully launched and orbited in space in order to test the network capabilities of the Cisco IOS and router on-board. Achievement made by using a router Cisco's Internet Protocol (IP) in the commercial GEO satellite for the first time. This technology uses satellite launched Intelsat IS-14. IRIS is an IP router development of radiation-resistant for use in satellites and other spacecraft. IRIS carried capability will support network services for voice communications, video, and data, while also helping government agencies, military and other stakeholders to communicate with one another using Internet protocol and existing devices."This achievement is the next step of our strategy to expand the network without boundaries in space and redefine how to support the communications satellite. This technology can transform communications satellite around the world so as to reduce delays in data transmission and improve efficiency, "said Steven Boutelle, Vice President, Cisco Global Government Solutions Group. Added to him, IRIS offers several advantages compared with conventional satellite technology. By leveraging the IRIS capability, users will gain a real mobile network. One experience that will be felt by the user is allowing them to connect and communicate in any way, wherever and whenever they want, then later adapted to the needs of users without relying on fixed infrastructure.
"IRIS technology from Cisco have certain potential to change how governments are using satellites for military purposes and other communication needs," added Michael Florio, JCTD Operations Manager, JCTD operations manager, Space and Defense Battle Lab. Other IRIS capabilities, can deliver data to more than one recipient directly, without having to teleport through several hops in order to reduce delays in data transmission and increasing the use of transponders. Software embedded on the Cisco router and a modem board can be upgraded while in orbit, thus increasing the flexibility and speed return on investment.
